Research interests

A background as a software engineer combined with a practical interest in beekeeping are now combined; the aim being to build a computational model comprising individual actor models of honey bees to construct a functional colony. The model should take into consideration the division of labour so that all of the numerous tasks are undertaken by an appropriate quantity of workers. A necessary component for this endeavour is a set of algorithms that describe the discrete activities which aggregate to deliver useful outcome. The initial subject my research is to explore the minute steps that guide individuals so that, when combined, the whole workforce effectively construct robust honeycomb over a complex surface. Furthermore the construction algorithms must describe the means by which the comb is located appropriately within an irregular cavity so that the various uses (brood rearing and food storage) are distributed in an optimal fashion.
